Unit 6 Electrical Engineering Electric Motors Paragraph 1 Each type of motor has its particular field of usefulness. Paragraph 1 Because of its simplicity, economy, and durability, the induction motor is more widely used for industrial purposes than any other type of ac motor, especially if a high speed drive is desired. Paragraph 2 If ac power is available, all drives requiring constant speed should use squirrel-cage induction or syncronous motors because of their ruggedness and low cost. Paragraph 2 Drives requiring varied speeds, such as fans, blowers or pumps, may be driven by wound-rotor induction motors. Paragraph 2 However, if there are machine tools or other machines Paragraph 3 Almost all constant-speed machines may be driven by ac motors because these motors are made with a variety of speed and torque characteristics. Paragraph 3 When large motor are required or when power supply is limited, the wound-rotor motor is used, even to drive constant-speed machines. Paragraph 4 For varing speed service, wound-rotor motors with resistance control are used for fans, blowers, and other apparatus for continous duty and are used for cranes, hoists, and other installations for intermittent duty. Paragraph 4 The controller and resistor must be properly chosen for the specific application. Paragraph 4 Synchronous motors may be used for almost any constant-speed drive requiring about 100 hp or over. Paragraph 5 Cost is an important factor when more than one type of motor is applicable. Paragraph 5 The squirrel-cage motor is the least expensive ac motor of the three types considered and requires very little control equipment. Paragraph 5 The wound-rotor is more expensive and requires additional secondary control. Paragraph 5 The synchronous motor is even more expensive and requires a source of dc excitation, as well as special synchronizing control to apply the dc power at the correct instant. Paragraph 5 When very large machines are involved, as, for example,
