PAGE 10 - 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background Over recent years, many Chinese, and especially young people, have become addicted to the internet. This problem can be described as a psychological addiction. It results in poor interpersonal communication, lack of self-esteem and inability to focus on study or work. It is apparent to health professionals who work in this area that internet addiction is a complex and difficult disorder. It can be quite easy to diagnose but is often hard to cure. As a result of the difficulties in treating this condition, the number of people who are addicted to the internet continues to grow. 1.2 Authorisation Professor James Brown, the Senior Consultant, requested this report on 17 November 2010 1.3 Aim of the report The purpose of this report is to provide some effective ways to identify young people who are addiction to the internet and the major effects of internet addition. It will also provide some strategies and recommendations to minimize these problems. 1.4 Scope The scope of the report mainly focuses on some effect ways to identify the internet addiction and the major effects of internet addiction. 2.0 THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAYS TO IDENTIFY YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE ADDICTED TO THE INTERNET 2.1 Excessive Use When a young man is addicted to the internet, he will forget the things around him. Since people are consumed by the internet so that they lose track of time online. Block (2008, p.306-7) point out that this type of people ‘often associated with a loss of sense of time or a neglect of basic drives’. They will have a sense of satisfaction when they put more time into the internet. As a result, the time they surf on the internet will exceed what they expected. If people who are addicted to the internet, they will have a poor self-control and they will frequently find themselves on the Internet longer than they intended. 2.2 Deviant Status The addicted young people may not pay attention to their classes, and
