Friday the 13th is the unluckiest of days. The origins of Friday the 13th superstition have been linked to the fact that there were 13 people at the last supper of Jesus, who was traditionally crucified on Good Friday. Often buildings will go from the 12th to the 14th floor, skipping the number 13 entirely. Even a hotel number ending in 13 may be refused. Many Americans will not schedule important events such as weddings or major surgery on this day. 6.2 Superstition迷信 Japan A young Japanese woman on her way to surgery began to cry when she noticed she was being wheeled into operating room number four. Why? Taboos are often rooted in the beliefs of the people of a specific region or culture and passed down from generation to generation. 6.3 Taboos 禁忌 China In China, messages should not be written in red ink as this has connotations of death. The biggest taboo in Chinese Culture is “death”. When the Chinese are talking about it, they rarely say the word directly, but find some other expressions to replace it. They often say someone is “sleeping” or “Gone.” In Chinese the pronunciation of “give someone a clock” is close to that of “a death wish,” so it is absolutely unsuitable to give someone a clock as a present. 6.3 Taboos 禁忌 India Don’t wear or carry leather in India.
