Part Three How to make it? 1.To fulfill the requirements of the new syllabus 大学英语教学是以英语语言知识与应用技能、学习策略和跨文化交际为主要内容…… ……目标是培养学生英语综合应用能力,特别是听说能力,……以适应我国经济发展和国际交流的需要。 The new national syllabus for CET (issued in early 2004) emphasizes the cultivation of the student’s competence in intercultural communication. In fact, one of the official purposes of TEFL in the Chinese education system is to enable more people to operate comfortably in the international arena and to understand foreign cultures and at the same time to express their ideas and air their views which are inevitably largely associated with Chinese culture and history. 2. To promote mutual understanding Is a rising China a threat? Military conflicts and clashes in trade between countries mostly result from differences in economic interests or misconception of each others’ values or religions. Under the background of economic globalization and world multipolarization, both national economic devolvement and worldwide peace keeping efforts call for the recognition of cultural diversity and a mutual respect among peoples who evolve from different cultural contexts. Of course, we cannot expect an internationally accepted language to settle these problems. However, such a language is necessary for peoples with different cultural backgrounds to put across their concepts and viewpoints and so be able to understand each other. In this sense, the English language we learn is no longer a language only transmitting English culture to its learners but a language conveying diversified cultures in a reciprocal manner. Intercultural communication, in a broad sense, is an exchange of each other’s native cultures.
