College of CivilEng-i neering, Tongji University, Shanghai200092, China) Abstract: Calcareous concretion soil is one kind of familiar special zonal soil in Anhui Huaibei Plain which has uniqueformation reasons and distribution laws. Based on field geological study and explora- tion, interior and exterior tests, related engineering geological exploration reports and professional lit- erature data, the structure and type of calcareous concretion soil in Huaibei Plain and thecharacteris- tics of regional distribution and vertical distribution are analyzed. The formation reasons of calcareous concretion and their impact on the structure and distribution are also discussed based on soi-l forming principle, mineral crystallography and micro-organizational thermodynamic theory. It is concluded that calcareous concretion soil results from the interaction of pedogenesis and diagenesis.The result is of great importance to study the engineering properties
