Section B Reading – Let’s Save the Elephants (Go for it -7B) Lesson length: 45 minutes Prior knowledge: In the previous sections, Ss have learned to describe animals, such as “elephant, kind of smart, really heavy” etc. They have also learned to express their preferences. For example, “Why do you like …?”/ “Let’s see … first.” They are interested in this topic and able to talk about animals in simple English. However, some of them think reading kind of boring and are reluctant to read. They may also have difficulties understanding long sentences. Therefore, activities are designed to arouse Ss’ interest and encourage their involvement in class. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: get the gist of the passage; complete the tasks based on comprehension; learn about the importance of saving and protecting endangered animals. Materials: Power point slides Worksheets for classroom activities Stage Procedure Purpose Pre-reading 1. Warm-up and lead-in 1.1 Ask one student to describe animals in English and the rest of Ss guess what is being described. 1.2 Introduce today’s mission and instructions. (Let’s Save the Elephant – a poor elephant gets caught and locked in a cage. Ss work together to get the password by completing all the tasks.) A guessing game can arouse Ss’ interest and lead to the topic quickly. For one thing, this mission fits the topic of the reading and creates a real situation for Ss to complete the tasks. For another, it encourages teamwork and Ss’ involvement in class. While-reading 2. Skimming – task 1 Skim the passage and underline the topic sentence for each paragraph.
