Abstract In the remote sensing satellite system, the satellite receiver is responsible for receiving the data which is captured by the satellite. If the data is not compressed, the amount of data will be very large and occupy a lot of channel bandwidth. So the data compression system is undoubtedly one of the most important part in the remote sensing satellite system. The major idea of this paper is to develop a system of images compression and decompression for the satellite receiver. As the new generation of still image compression standard, JPEG2000 with its excellent compression features and higher resistance to ber performance have been widely used in the fields of astronautics and aerospace. Firstly，we introduces the principle of JPEG2000 image compression standard, including the preprocessing of the source image, discrete wavelet transform, quantization, entropy coding; Then the thesis describes the design and realized scheme of the systematic hardware.We choose the FPGA chip which type is Xilinx virtex6 XC6VLX240T and ADV212 as the core module.Next, according to the system requirements,wo chose HIPI mode for ADV212, then realizes the hardware circuit design and the making of printed circuit boards combined with the FMC standard.Furthermore, we have designed the software implementation scheme, including the conversion of 16/24 bits BMP image to YCBCR4:2:2 component image, chip initialization, parameter configuration, the transmission of compressed code stream.Finally, we have a test on the compression and decompression system. The results show that the system satisfy the basic needs of the project.It not only can compress 16/24 bits BMP image to JPEG2000 format but also can decompress the compressed stream to YCBCR4:2:2 stream. The reconstructed image perform well in subjective quality.
