II II ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Embedded system is the specialized computer system for some specific application of which the software and hardware can be customized reduced for the performance, cost, reliability or power saving purpose .In the past few years，the embedded devices has developed very quickly, such as cell phones, digital camera, multi-media player, and many kinds of home appliances. Now we can say that we can’t live without the embedded technology. ARM processors have been widely used in embedded systems because of its high performance, low cost, low power consumption, and rich peripheral interfaces. And s3c2410A is a very typical ARM processor, it is widely used in hand-held devices and general embedded applications. GPS with the full name of Global Position System is a network of satellites that continuously transmit coded information which makes it possible to precisely identify location on earth by measuring distance from the satellites. GPS was originally built by U.S. Department of Defense for military purpose, and later it was partly open for civilian use, which led to a huge industry, the navigation industry. Navigators are now widely used. Linux is an Operating System which is developed from UNIX. It has many advantages: opening source code, free-available, high stabilization. It supports many hardware platforms such as X86,ARM,PowerPC and so on. So it is very suitable in low-cost, rapidly developed design. This paper aims at designing a GPS navigator based on the s3c2410a, which adopts Linux operating system. In this paper, we will also have a study and a discussion on embedded system. We will introduce main circuits including GPS module, Flash memory, SD memory, touch screen, UART. We will also present bootloader, Linux kernel transplant.
