It is classified into Sino-Tibetan linguistic family, Tibeto-Burman subfamily, Tangut-Qiang branch. Southern Pumi locates in the south most of the Qiang languages regions geographically, and maintains many ancestral traits of Sino-Tibetan languages, showing great academic value. As there is no formal writing for Pumi, we designed the Southern Pumi spelling using 26 Latin letters and two tone symbols. This writing design is associated to the International Phonetic Symbols, and therefore is well regulated. The computer input of the Latinized Pumi is also fairly easy, indicating this Latinization writing is worth popularizing. Related closely to Chinese languages phylogenetically, the Pumi writing can also use the Chinese characters. The design of Pumi writing will help the conservation and research on the Pumi language and other Sino-Tibetan languages.
