Preliminary Preliminary study OH the effect of monosaccharide to the growth of Chlorella Author：Chai Shuai jie Major：Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Supervisor：Liu Guo zhen Abstract In recent years，as for excessive consumption of fossil energy,the fossil energy in the world is facing depletion，and the earth’S environment has been polluted significantly． People start to pay more attention to looking for clean and sustainable energy．Bio-energy, as a new,clean，sustainable，renewable，environment friendly,biodegradable，making it is a promising alternative to fossil fuels．Microalgae，compared with the ordinary oil crops，is considered as the promising sources of biodiesel，as it posses a number of advantages：high photosynthetic efficiency,fast growth rate，high lipid content，year-round cultivation over a wide range of habitats including non·arable land．In addition，microalgae cultivation Can also produce high value by products including hydrogen，protein，astaxanthin and feed etc． 111e effect on the growth of chlorella cultivation by supplement different monosaccharide as organic carbon source will be investigated towards the improvement of chlorella cultivation and increase its oil content．Chlorella sorokiniana(UTEXl230)was used to carry out the experiment．Different concentrations of monosaccharides(glucose，fructose， galactose and xylose)were added in the culture medium as exogenous organic carbon source，chlorella was cultured in dark and light environment respectively,OD750nm， biomass，consumption of monosaccharide and residue，oil content，and pigment content were mesured at seven days．In addition，cell morphology and phenotype of chlorella was observed under microscope．It was found that，the growth of chlorella Was promoted when glucose Was added in medium as organic carbon source，The OD750nm value and biomass increased dramatically both in photomixotrophic(1ight+glucose)or heterotrophic (dark+glucose)conditions．The highest OD750nm value was 2 times higher than that of autotro
