Step 1: Discussing questions in small groups
Hello, class. For this period we will learn about advertising. I’d like you to work in small groups and finish the following warm-up tasks.
Look at the advertisements on page 37 of the textbook closely and discuss each of the advertisement with the guiding questions.
The first advertisement (ad) is about the computer operation training. By presenting a picture of an expanded computer and a teaching giving lessons, the ad directly and clearly conveys the message that a good computer-training program is available. Anyone who catches sight of the ad will be deeply affected because of the persuasive slogan on the right side of ad. It reads “ The way to success”. The picture of the monitor and the keyboard takes up almost the whole ad board so that it looks much larger than its usual size, and thus a striking impression is left upon viewers. I think this is quite a well-designed ad.
The second ad is about a shampoo. It tries to persuade consumers to buy the brand of True shampoo. As can be seen, two bottles of shampoo are standing on the right at the bottom. Consumers’ attention will be successfully directed to the enlarged words, TRUE BEAUTY SHAMPOO, because the words are presented on the most noticeable space and they stand out. The slogan, I think is the most extraordinary. By using the expressions “ true beauty, true love, true happiness”, not only does the ad bring favorable feelings of the product to the consumers, but consumers are also ensured to remember the True brand because of the beautiful repetition o
