What does the word Methodology imply to you when you hear it? That there is a method, a defined way for doing something. TPM is a Methodology that you must follow if you are to achieve results. TPM is based on results - if you are not getting results then you are not doing TPM - you are just doing a lot of non-value added activities Phillips Petroleum stated that they install TPM the Japanese way and that they achieve instant gains and as such they do not even budget for it. When I ask what they meant by the “Japanese Way” they said “We follow the Correct Methodology”. My message to you today is that if you are going to install TPM then follow the correct methodology and you will be able to drive performance to the bottom line Step One - Initial Clean Inspection. Our team will select a machine and then we will walk around the machine noting all discrepancies. We will document each abnormality and photograph it. Once this is done we will start disassembling the machine for a thorough inspection and cleaning Step Two - We will identify the sources of contamination and inaccessible areas and try and eliminate them. Step Three - We will develop some temporary cleaning, lubrication, and inspection checklists so we can sustain our initial gains. Step Four - You will receive training in some of the machines basic functions such as hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical, drives, nuts bolts. Step Five - We will develop our daily inspection schedule and carry it out religiously.
