AbstractCode.switching(hereafter Abstract Code.switching(hereafter cs)is a term which has been arousing much attention of sociolinguists since the late 1 960s.CS has many different definitions.The author accepts Myers.Scotton’S(1 998:1 07)opinion.That is to say,the author’S CS includes inter-sentential switching and intra·sentential switching. Discourse analysis is the focus of linguists’attention at home and abroad.And discourse analysis in classroom has been especially focused by many linguists and educationists.The research of CS in the classroom can be dated back to the research of bilingual education in the United States in the late 1 970s.From the literature review of CS in foreign language classroom,the present researcher finds that most of the studies mentioned have approached CS in foreign language classroom from SLA point of view,functional approach, ethnographic approach,social approach and socio—psychological approach.However few people has studied CS from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics(hereafter SFU.Therefore,the present researcher will study CS in EFL classroom from the perspective of SFL.And the APPRAISAL theory is applied as the theoretical framework of this thesis.The APPRAISAL theory is a new lexical—grammar theoretical framework which is developed from the research of Interpersonal metafunction in SFL.This thesis mainly involves ATTITUDE and ENGAGEMENT which are two subsystems in the APPRAISAL system.The present researcher will observe linguistic and pedagogical functions of CS from ATTITUDE and ENGAGEMENT subsystem. This thesis consists of five chapters with the arrangement as the following:Chapter 1 briefly introduces the research question,rationales and methodology of the present study. Chapter 2 presents a literature review of previous studies of code-switching in EFL classroom including some key terms and approaches towards code-switching related to the present study.Chapter 3 expounds the theoretical framework and gives
