unit20 Apollo And The Shepherd For many years, everyone agreed that no one could make better music than Apollo, the Greek god of music. He was very proud of how well he could play the lyre. Then one day, he heard about a shepherd called Olander who played the flute and whose music was as good as his. Apollo invited Olander to Oelos, the island on which he lived. As soon as Olander arrived, Apollo challenged him to a musical contest. You and I will perform before a large audience and the Muses shall judge which of us makes better music, he declared. The Muses, who were the nine daughters of the god Zeus, were responsible for the arts. First Apollo and then Olander played their finest music. So good were they both that the Muses could not choose between them. Angrily, Apollo suggested they should play again, but this time they would play their instruments the opposite way around. Again, Apollo played first. He turned his lyre upside down but was still able to make beautiful music. When it was danders turn, he had to put the other end of his flute into his mouth. He blew as hard as he could but, of course, no sounds would come from it. It was oniy then that Olander realized that Apollo had tricked him. Apollo claimed victory, but the Muses refused to accept tha was the winner. He had, they said, won the contest by trickery and did deserve any prize.
