The Man Who Could Not Sleep Most of us need at leasteight hours of sleep every night,though some people canmanage with as little as three orfour hours. , However, we all need some sleep in the same way that we need food and drink. Doctors have carried out experiments to find out how people behave when they do not get enough sleep. In all cases, people are badly affected and behave in strange ways. There was one man, however, who never slept at all. His name was Al Herpin and he worked as a handyman. He was of average intelligence and in good health. He was normal in every way except that he couldnt sleep at all. At first, doctors thought he was a fraud. They took turns watching him 24 hours a day for several weeks. Not once did he even lie down. In fact, there was nothing in his house to lie on. The only furniture he had was a rocking chair and a table. Al got tired like other people, but all he needed to do was sit in his rocking chair for a few hours. He passed the time reading newspapers. Al Herpin believed that his condition was caused by an accident his mother had a few days before he was born. He closed his eyes for the first, last and final time on January 4th, 1947. He was 94.
