Steve Binder Talks about the King This video clip is an edited interview with Steve Binder, producer and director of Elvis’ 68 Comeback Special and clips from the show. Basically it tells the story of somebody who starts as an unknown guitar man from a small town and works his way up to the amazing success, makes a fortune, and realizes his happiness. This was the thread that had never been stated but the theme underlying Elvis’ music. According to Steve Binder, what is the theme that underlies Elvis’ show in 1968? 2. What makes The ’68 Comeback the landmark television special and a milestone in Elvis’ career? The following ideas might be included in the discussion: It was the first time in the national network, on prime time television that one man did the whole show by himself, no guest stars. It was the first time the NBC staff orchestra was not used. The records, rock ’n’ roll and musicians were all handpicked. What Steve Binder, the producer saw Elvis off camera was what he wanted to translate on camera. So the audience could see for the first time Elvis’ soul, and get to see Elvis as he really was. The globalization of production means much more than just shooting studio films in Asia, however: Hollywood today is going into the business of producing and distributing “foreign” movies. This move derives from studio executives’ suspicion that Hollywood films may have reached the limits of their overseas appeal. As evidence, they point to the growing popularity of locally-made films around the world. Hollywood is finding ways to turn a profit on the desire of local audiences to see local films; rather than trying to beat the competition, the studios are joining it. In the last few years, Columbia, Warner Brothers, Disney/Buena Vista, Miramax, and Universal have all created special overseas divisions or partnerships to produce and distribute films in languages other than English – including German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, and Chinese.
