各种羊, how to say? 山羊:goat 绵羊:sheep 羚羊: antelope 羊羔:lamb 公羊: ram 母羊: ewe 羊皮:sheepskin, lambskin, or goatskin 羊肉:mutton 羊毛: wool or fleece 羊毛衫: a knitted woolen sweater 羊脂: suet or mutton fat 羊脂玉: white jade 祥,吉祥安泰 Sheep and goats have long been symbols of auspiciousness in Chinese culture. In ancient times, a family which owned more sheep was considered more prosperous and lucky. “吉羊”or good sheep, are two decoration characters commonly found engraved on bronze wares dating back to the Han Dynasty(206BC-220AD). Sheep means blessing, according to “Shuo wen jie zi”, an ancient Chinese dictionary. That’s why in olden times a sheep’s head would be hung over a door at the New Year, and the sheep were given as gifts to friends and used as parts of betrothal presents. Sheep also symbolizes peace. The old expression “san yang kai tai”, meaning with the ebb of winter and the advent of spring begin new lives and prosperity, is used at the New Year to wish a peaceful and good year to come. As the character for “goat” is a homophone(同音同形异义词) for “sun” in this expression, both pronounced as “yang”, the expression conjures up an image of three goats, which later became a well-known motif to express good fortune and prosperity. The city of Guangzhou takes the goat as its symbol. Legends said that five goats descended from heaven riding goats into the city, and left six ears of millet for local people, wishing to make the place immune from famine. The gods flew away, but the goats turned into stone sculptures. Guangzhou is called the “City of Goats” even today. 养,传统膳食 Chinese people began domesticating animals and raising them for food in ancient times. Among the 6 major livestock people kept back then, sheep, pigs, dogs, cattle, horses and chicken, sheep were considered the most important. That’s because sheep are easier to domesticate compared with the bigger animals such as cattle and horses, while providing better and greater quantity of food than smaller ones such as dogs and
