Abstract
When a ship is traveling forward in water, due to the increased flow speed around the hull, the water pressure on the hull decreases. In order to keep balance,the hull will make a sinkage and trim. When traveling from deep water into shallow water, the water flow
near the bow or stern is restricted due to limited water depth, change from flow in three-dimensional space in deep water, to the flow in two-dimensional plane to both sides or inward from both sides at the same time. Compared to the flow speed beneath the hull in deep water, the flow speed will increase, which decrease the water pressure on the hull, thus the sinkage and trim of the hull will increase. The faster a ship is moving, the squat phenomenon is more obvious. At the same time, the ship resistance increases and wave
increases in the bow,thus causes steering difficulties, etc. The biggest danger with the
squat phenomenon in shallow water is stranding of the ship, it may also cause damage to the rudder and propeller, greatly endanger the ship’s safety. If a ship’s squat can be accurately predicted, sufficient allowance can be made for the ship to pass through shallow water in safety, and can made some practical advice for port and waterway design.
In this thesis, the commercial CFD software ANSYS FLUENT is used to study the squat of two ship models: the Wigley hull and a very large crude carrier model KVLCC2. Numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the viscous flow around the two hulls and compute the hydrodynamic forces on the hulls as the ships are traveling in shallow and confined waters. The squat of the two ship models calculated are from noticeable to significant.
The work of this thesis begins with three-dimensional modeling of the two ships’ hull geometry, setting up the computational domains and mesh generation. Fluent is used to simulate the viscous flow around the two ships’ hull with free surface in different wate
