Based on a large am ount o f stud ies, w e d iscu ss the concepts o f d irectivity effect, the reason to cau se it and the ch aracter istics and factorsw hich affect the d irectivity effect. W e also discu ss som e related con- cepts, su ch as the finite m ov ing source effect, rupture prop agation e ffect and Doppler effect. Through the com par-i son and d iscu ssion o f these concep ts, results indicate th at the directiv ity effect can be smi ply expla ined by the finite m oving source effect, or rupture propagat ion effect, or Doppler e ffect, bu t it is d ifferent in nature. F ina lly, som e suggestion s are given to further study the directiv ity effect in earthquake engineering.
