Usually, there are many combustible materials left in the heavy fire spots, interfering in the identification of the burning accelerants. Discoveries have revealed that the examination of combustion debris collected from the partitioned investigation area is a good choice to overcome such a hindrance, able to determine whether there is any external accelerant to ignite a fire so as to define the cause of an incident. This paper reports the scene investigation and evidence verification about a cause-unknown fire case. On the spot were parked many motorcycles whose fuel tanks contained the gasoline interfering the testing of accelerant residues. Therefore, the area-partitioning strategy was adopted to collect combustion debris from several sites in the key area of the scene. The gasoline filled in motorcycles was successfully excluded from the firing source. Finally, the other gasoline residue, demonstrating different origin, was detected in multiple sites at the fire scene.
