Unit 7 What’s the highest mountain in the world?
Period 1 Section A (1a-2d)
1. Learning goals: Students are able to
say large numbers and size in English;
compare facts with comparatives and superlatives.
2. Key words expressions:
high, long, deep, in size, desert, ocean, population, feel free to, make, the main reason is to, as you can see, as far as I know, as … as, one of ….
3. Target languages:
--Whats the highest mountain in the world?
-- Qomolangma.
-- How high is Qomolangma?
-- Its 8,844.43 meters high. Its higher than any other mountain.
-- Which is the deepest salt lake in the world? -
- The Caspian Sea is the deepest of all the salt lakes.
-- Did you know that China is one of the oldest countries in the world?
-- Yes, I did. Its much older than the US.
Focuses and difficulties:
-- to talk about geography and nature with adjectives and adverbs;
-- to use comparatives and superlatives of adjectives and adverbs
5. Teaching process:
Step 1 Lead-in
1.1 Watch the pictures on P49 and talk about them by using “How deep/high/long/ big is ...?”
Help Ss answer in this way: It’s ... meters/kilometers/square kilometers deep/ high/long/in size.
1.2 Look at the pictures and practice the dialogue.
E.g. A: How high is Qomolongma?
B: It’s 8,844.43 meters high.
Step 2 Presentation 1
2.1 Match the facts you know – 1a.
2.2 Presentation.
When we talk about height, length, width, etc, we can use the pattern:
“ ... meters high/ long/ wide ...”(数词+量词+表示长、宽、高的形容词)
2.3 Listening – 1b.
Step 3 Practice
Use the information in 1b to make conversations – 1c.
-- What is the highest mountain in the world?
-- Qomolangma.
-- How high is Qomolangma?
-- It’s 8,844.43 meters high.
Step 4 Presentation 2
4.1 How to say large numbers in English
Teacher presents the numbers--6,300/5,000/5,465/300, and students read them.
4.2 Ss are expected to compare the numbers and get prepared for the following listening.
