The Past and Present State of Schooling in Tu Yao Communities: An Ethnographic

(According to the fifth item of the State Compulsory Education Acts, “all
those who are at the age of six, with no differences of sex, ethnicity or race, should go
to school and complete the defined years of compulsory education ”. In some remote
ethnic minority communities in China, however, the enrollment rate of the school age
is less than 50%. This p aper, based on school ethnography, tries to outline the past
and describe the present state of schooling in Tu Yao communities, with the hope of
arousing the local governments ’ attention to the schooling among the ethnic
minorities, especially those living in remote areas. )
