(D ep a tment of SI C U, Ruij in H osp ital, School of M edicine, S hanghai J iaotong Univ e sity , S hang hai 200025, China) Abstract: Objective o evaluate t he efficacy and safety of colistin (polymyxin E) injection in the treatment of severe infect ions caused by multidrug-resistant ( MDR) gram-negative bacilli. Methods he efficacy and renal toxicity of colistin for treating in- fections caused by MDR gram-negat ive bacilli were studied in hospit alized adult patients in SICU. en patients treated between May 20 06 and September 2 00 7 w ere included. Results Over the study period, 12 courses of i.v. colistin w ere administered to 10 patients. he M DR organisms isolated from these patients included P seudomonas ae ug inos a, A cinetobacte baumannii or Ente obacte cloacae . All strains w ere susceptible exclusively to colist in. A favorable clinical response ( 75 %) w as reported at the end of 12 courses of colist in therapy. he follow-up cultures w ere available in these patients, 73. 1% achieved microbiologi- cal clearance. Only one patient showed slight elevat ion in mean serum creat inine possibly related to septic shock. here w ere no significant colistin-related nephrotoxicity or neurotoxicity in t he other patients. Conclusions Colist in appeared to be efficacious an
