Hubei Provincial Xiangfan city Institute of Archaeology, Xiangfan 441300, Hubei, China) Abstract: To study the craft of Quartz Beads (faience) from Zengguo Tomb, Zaoyang, Hubei, the body and glaze layer of the beads were analyzed by microscopic observation, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrum (XRF) and fired experiments. The results shows that the production process of quartz beads was as following: First, the quartz beads were made of pure crushed quartz, mixed with few adhesive. Second, the low iron-content clay, lime or plant ash, the colorant with Cu were mixed and glazed on the surface of the beads (the techniques of the proto-porcelain glaze). Finally, the beads were completed after firing in the kiln. The simu- lation experiments showed the possible technique of producing faience. Key words: Quartz Bead (faience); imitations of manuf
