This flow chart is to re-enforce the potential problems which are going to be encountered when AGPs are removed from broiler diets. Although some parts of this presentation would also apply to non-viscous diets with the removal of AGPs, the main focus has been viscous based diets for broilers. More data for non-viscous diets should be available in the future. This figure compares the impact of AGPs and enzymes in head to head trials. These trials were wheat-based diets using enzymes. The enzymes used in these trials are not specific for Finnfeeds (not all Avizyme) but are valid to show the effect across enzyme applications. Enzymes are not a replacement for antibiotic growth promotants (AGPs). However, with the removal of AGPs, enzymes may be a tool to minimise the negative effect of AGP removal. In addition, be aware that producers may also be evaluating other approaches to minimise the negative effect of AGP removal. Many of these approaches may work well in combination with enzymes. Reduce protein and increase dietary particle size - Result - increases gizzard activity which more finely grinds the feed and reduces nitrogen available for ileal and caecal pathogens Acidifiers Use of whole wheat - increases gizzard activity Use of higher quality raw materials - reduces indigestible fraction reaching ileum and caecum region. BETAINE - Maintains osmotic balance which increases intestinal integrity and maintains cellular water balance, particularly beneficial during periods of disease stress The 3 key modes of action for Avizyme in viscous diets include: Intestinal viscosity reduction Increased nutrient digestibility Altered intestinal carbohydrate profile The impact when viscosity is high (poor samples of wheat) and/or nutrients are poorly digested (poorly digested low viscous grains) is bigger with the removal of AGPs. Greater amounts of rapidly digestible substrate reach the end of the small intestine, and, as a result, bacterial populations bloom. Increase
