M.A.ThesisofChongqingUniversity 英文摘要 ABSTRACT A pioneer of feminist literature, Virginal Woolf, who has been regarded as a distinguishedandmosttalentedBritishnovelist,producednumerousmasterpieces. One of her most famous masterwork of feminism, To the Lighthouse , has already been profoundlystudiedbyliteraturescholars,andtheyhavemadeconvincinginterpretations of this novel from the perspective of eco-feminism. By presenting the opposition to anthropocentrismandandrocentrism,theappealforastateofharmony,thismasterwork embodiessomekeyeco-feministelements. In translating classic literary works, fidelityplays a vital role in the process. In a restrictedsense,fidelitymeansconveyingtheexactmeaningofthewordsandsentences. However, broadly speaking, fidelity also indicates the faithfulness to the distinctive features and spirit of the original work. The distinguished writer and translator Lin Yutanghasputforwardthefourprinciplesoffidelityintranslation:(a)Fidelitydoesnot mean a word-for-word correspondence; (b) Fidelity means that the translator should translatetheoriginalintonaturalChinese;(c)Fidelitymeansconveyingthespiritofthe original;(d)Thereisnoabsolutefidelity(Ma,2007). This thesis intends to compare the two Chinese versions of To theLighthouse by Ma Ainong and Lin Zhihe andto find outwhich one ofthem has faithfully expressed the eco-feminist spirit of the original masterwork by employing the following four principlesoffidelityputforwardbythedistinguishedwriterandtranslatorLinYutang. This study finds out that compared with Lin Zhihe’s translation, Ma Ainong’s version is more faithful to the eco-feminist elements of the original text, for Ma’s version successfully keeps the spirit of the original text: the opposition to anthropocentrismandandrocentrism,theappealforastateofharmony.
