Prof. Li Yueyan Abstract The residence is an important space for social and family activities. With the rapid development of the society in the 21st century and the high-speed urbanization process under the world’s limited resources, the urban population has grown at an increasing rate, while the family population is relatively declined and the population mobility in society has become stronger. The social problem of an aging population living alone is also highlighted in this process. In this environment, the small residential space is a very suitable living mode, and also a strong complement to existing housing in form and structure. However, this apartment layout has many problems in the actual design and application. Solving these problems and contradictions in a limited area and designing compact, practical and comfortable living spaces to meet the different needs of occupants is important and relatively to the practical concerns of the society. The thesis can be divided into the following parts: The thesis focuses on the analysis of the development and evolution, the background, the developing process and the spatial characteristics of the small residential space in different areas and periods both at home and abroad. It also depicts the dynamic process which develops from meeting the bisic living requirments to forming muture design theory. the thesis introduces classical cases to ananlyse the characteristics of the flat space and makes a summary of methods and advantages that can be used in the small residential space design process. Then do investigations in the realistic residence in order to know the feelings and denmands of the residents, and makes it as the standards in the small residential space design.
