They reached America in Autumn , and soon suffered starvation , plague and coldness in Winter . Those survived set out to plant crops in Spring . All their lives depended on the crops , which turned out to be a unexpected harvest . They believed god helped them ,thus they had a three-day carnival, the customs passed on and spread wide . In 1863 , President Lincon declared the fourth Thursday as the Thanksgiving Day . Custom The Thanksgiving is a lively day .People from nation wide return home to enjoy together . In the Thanksgiving people get up very early , then do some make-ups ,wear bizarre costumes , and then they participate in various activities. . The Christians would go to church to say their prayers .
