The person is required to complete a torque check of a steering component prior to customer shipment. The reach to the wrench is a motion waste, in addition to ergonomic risk to the right shoulder and right elbow. How can we make this job both more efficient and healthy? The solution was to lower the wrench by adjusting the hose reel tension knob and posting a message to remind operators that they should adjust the hose reel whenever it is too high. These simple improvements resulted in better working postures to the right elbow and shoulder while also reducing the motion waste at this operation by 0.3 seconds. Cost for this improvement was negligible and the benefit extreme. One of the simplest ways to assess a workstation is to ask a simple question - “Would You Do it This Way?”. If your answer is, “Yes,” then chances are the job is pretty good. If your answer was “No,” then this is a good indication that we need to review the job for ergonomics. Everytime we look at a job, we must remember that people must do the job, and question whether the workstation has been designed with people in mind. Can we honestly say that the job is the: - safest, comfortable, most functional, and logical way to work? Or, do certain tasks or pieces of equipment stand out as awkward, difficult, or painful to use which may contribute to work-related MSDs?
