( 100084) (LPR) LPR OD LPR LPR Application of License Plate Recognition system on urban traffic management Chen Xiqun Yang Xinmiao Shi Qixin (Institute of Transportation Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China) Abstract: Chinas urban road monitoring systems are in a stage of rapid development, this paper introduces basic components, data transmission and storage of video detection and license plate recognition (LPR) systems. Combined with Beijings LPR system of main roads, applications of LPR technology are depicted in urban transportation safety, demand management, travelers information services, traffic flow theory and so on. It is proposed that LPR systems are also available and play roles on speed detection, oscillations examination, density inspection, dynamic OD estimation. At the same time, the paper point out that LPR technology is vulnerable to a variety of factors, which may constrain the applications. LPR systems play an increasingly important role in urban traffic management with the extension of application scales.
