Vital substances:Essence, Qi, Blood and Body Fluids Essence 精(jing) Essential substances constituting the human body and maintaining life activities. In a broad sense, it generally refers to anything essential to the maintenance of life: qi, blood, body fluids and essential substances from food. In a narrow sense, it refers to essential substance for reproduction, or congenital essence. Acquired essence 后天之精 (hou tian zhi jing)—essence of grain and water 水谷之精(shui gu zhi jing) Visceral essence 脏腑之精 (zang fu zhi jing)—from acquired essence. Congenital essence 先天之精 (xian tian zhi jing)—essence stored in kidney Reproductive essence 生殖之精 (sheng zhi zhi jing)—one form of essence stored in kidney, from congenital essence. Theory of Essential qi Essential qi 精气 (jing qi): essence in its active aspect of maintaining and procreating life is often referred to as ‘essential qi’. Essential qi is both essence and qi. The primary state of the universe is qi, the constant movement of which produces all the things in the universe, including life. Essential qi is constantly and actively moving, transforming, interacting in the universe. Essential qi is extremely fine and invisible. The Motive Force/energy: Qi That which animates life is called Qi. An invisible force known only by its effects, Qi is recognized indirectly by what it fosters, generates and protects. Qi is an invisible substance, as well as an immaterial force that manifests as movement and activity through which it is palpable and observable. Matter is Qi taking shape. Qi is the cause and also the effect. Qi is the most essential substance that makes up the body and maintains life activities. Qi has its own movement and also activates the movement of all vital substances other than itself. Qi begets motion and heat.
