Based on t he concept s of landscap e ecology and landscap e heterogeneity , t his p ap er concludes t hat
t he sp atial and temporal heterogeneity in ecological systems is t he kernel of landscap e ecology . From
views of structure , function and dynamics , t he concept s and ecological significance of t he sp atial and
temporal heterogeneity of landscap e as well as it s roles and applications in landscap e ecology are re
viewed . Finally , t he characteristics of hierarchy and scale , and t he effect s of human on t he landscap e
heterogeneity are discussed .
