People love Hollywood films not because of the fantastic stunts, hot scenes and exquisite production, but also the global vision and diversified elements. Throughout the history of American films, the image of Chinese people has always occupied a certain position. In American films, Chinese men always seem to display vicious or feminine characteristics. They are all “Others” in Hollywood. The female characters are usually divided into two types: exotic and distorted images. In the male-dominated culture, Chinese women are the inferior of the inferior, and the other of the other. With the improvement of China’s international status, the image of the Chinese in the American films has been changing gradually. This thesis studies the Chinese images in Hollywood films. It introduces the general situation of Hollywood films and the history of Chinese images on screen and analyses the images of Chinese male and female images respectively. Through the analysis, this thesis aims to convey the message that no matter what kind of roles the Chinese play in Hollywood films, they are always standing at a passive position and Hollywood films are never real to show Chinese qualities because Hollywood has formed a tradition to show the “disguised Chinese”, a perpetual other. By studying Chinese images in Hollywood films, this paper intends to provide Chinese people with a new perspective to re-examine themselves so as to improve the Chinese images in the whole world.
