Lecture 4Walter Scott(1771—1832 )瓦尔特·司各特 Early Life In 1771,Born in College Wynd in the Old Town of Edinburgh, the son of a solicitor In 1773, live in rural Borders region at his grandparents farm (taught to read by his aunt Jenny) In 1778 ,Scott returned to Edinburgh for private education to prepare him for school Late Life In 1786 he began an apprenticeship in his farhers office. During the winter of 1786–87 the 15-year-old Scott saw Robert Burns. In 1789–90 he went to the university to study law, first taking classes in Moral Philosophy and Universal History. After graduated, he became a lawyer in Edinburgh. In 1805. After Scott had founded a printing press, his poetry brought him fame, beginning with The Lay of the Last Minstrel In 1813 he was offered the position of Poet Laureate. He declined, and the position went to Robert Southey. Beginning in 1825, Scott again went into financial troubles as his printing company nearly collapsed. He died at his residence in 1832. II. Scott’s Works 1. Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border, 《苏格兰边区歌谣集》, which he had collected among the Scottish people for many years. 2.The Lay of the Last Minstrel,《最末一个行吟诗人》 3. Marmion《玛密恩》(描写弗洛登战役) 4. Talisman 《惊军英雄记》 3. Count Robert of Paris《巴黎的罗伯特伯爵》 St. Ronan’s Wells《圣·罗南之泉》, the only one, dealing with his contemporary life (当代生活小说). III. Features of Scott’s Novels 1.Scott has an outstanding gift of vivifying the past. 2. In his novels, historical events are closely interwoven with the fates of individuals. 3.
