Abstract Abstract With the development of Chinese software export, more and more Chinese software companies focus on the European and American market and sell software products to foreign customers. These companies adopt the online marketing and establish English websites to introduce software and provide services to customers. Furthermore, promotional writings such as press release are needed to boost sales. User manuals are embedded in the software to teach the users to use the software. These technical documentations play important roles in the Chinese software export. The quality of software technical documentations directly affects the international sales of the software and the brand of the software and company. The main functions of software technical documentations are informative function and vocative function. These documentations, whose target readers are English native-speakers, are created by Chinese employees majored in English at school or with excellent English skills based on the rough Chinese versions. So, there are still some differences from documentations written by foreign professional technical writers. This thesis aims to summarize the problems and deficiencies in the current software technical documentations from Chinese companies compared to those from European and America companies and analyze how to exert the translator’s subjectivity and apply variation theory in the translation of software technical documentation. This thesis first introduces the definition, classification and function of the software technical documentation, summarizes the deficiencies in current translated software technical documentation from Chinese companies, and then probes the causes of these deficiencies, mainly culture, language and education factors. The emphasis of this thesis discusses how to adopt different translation strategies in the C-E translation of software technical documentation.
