Lesson 1
The Pleasure of Learning

Aims: 1. Get the students to read and understand the text and help them master the structures of the patterns;
2. Get the students to master the words in Word Study and the derivatives of words;
3. Help them master the grammatical rules presented;
4. Help them finish off all the exercises both in vocabulary and in grammar.
Main Points: Understanding the text and learning the WORDS and GRAMMAR
Difficult Points: The structures of difficult sentences
Teaching Methods: Discussion, interpretation and the students’ teaching.
Teaching Course:
Pre-class Task: Previewing the text. Every student should go over the whole text so that they can get the main idea and write the gist. Each team have to read a part of the text with more care, that is, try to understand every sentence and paraphrase some difficult ones, explain some new words in English and find difficult points which they cannot solve by themselves and present them to the others in class. Six teams have their own previewing task:
Team 1: from the beginning to “…are possessed by all children” on page 2.
Team 2: from “But if the pleasure of learning is universal, …” to “…hear it speaking, mind to mind, heart to heart” on page 2.
Team 3: from “But, far beyond books, learning means keeping the mind open…” on page 2 to “…and neatness throughout” on page 3.
Team 4: from “Within a few years, this initially rather dull hobby…” on page 3 to “…and enjoy the food of immortals.” on page 4.
Team 5: from “Learning extends our lives .…” on page 4 to “It needs a long, deliberate effort of the mind and the emotions, and even the body” on page 5.
Team 6: from “During our earthly life, …” on page 5 to the end.
In Class:
Step 1 One student from each team reads the part of text which they have pre-read.
Step 2 The representative who takes his turn explains the difficult points of that part or just puts them forward, and then other students or the
