I formed a deep impression of your works, but it seems the pieces exhibited in the
current show are a bit different from your previous ones – did you specifically do
them for the exhibition? What is their relationship with the show’s theme of
“Revel”? What about Tang? Can you talk a bit about the work you’re showing?
There’s a certain level of provocation in all of your works, and there’s usually a
strong sense of self-involvement, as in “Exchange”.

You’ve always had a strong sense of self-awareness. Could you both talk a bit
about audience interaction?
Zhang Enli (ZEL): I specifically did them for this show, but the end purpose of an
artist’s work is still the painting itself. I think of new ideas every year. The circle
hanging in my workspace is aesthetically pleasing. Even a kid can use a dart as a dart.
I did it before, seven or eight years ago – I thought of it as a painting. I’ve done many
of these things, on a globe for example. I feel these works express something joyful,
and they suit the theme of th
