Shanghai Research Center for Wireless Communication, Shanghai 200050, China) Abstract: A novel handoff algorithm named sub-channel combination (SCHC) handoff algorithm used in multi-carrier cellular mobile communication system was proposed. Multi-dimensional Markov chain was used to analyze the perform- ances of SCHC handoff algorithm. Analytical results of the key parameters such as handoff blocking probability were ana- lytically obtained. The analysis shows that the proposed scheme of sub-channel combination improves the handoff perform- ance as compared with the guard channel algorithm. The handoff blocking probability for the bandwidth consuming service is decreased while the other communication quality remains unchanged during the handoff. The sub-channel combination scheme can also work with the other resource reservation handoff schemes to improve their performances.
