* A full-depth AC pavement by definition comprises wholly of AC layers. Therefore, a PATB and an AC separator layer are a must in this design. * This is a typical pavement section with a geotextile as a separator layer. The geotextile is being used as a separator layer to prevent intrusion of fines from the subgrade and is wrapped around the aggregate edgedrain, acting as a filter to allow water to pass through while preventing fines from clogging the edgedrain. * * This system consists of a nonerodible dense-graded base under the traffic lanes and a treated permeable base under the shoulder. The nonerodible base can consist of a LCB with at least 8 percent cement or an AC base with at least 6 percent asphalt. This design offers better support under the traffic lanes where it is needed most, while still providing a means to remove water from the pavement structure. Mention that this design is a lot in Europe. California also uses porous concrete shoulders. * This shows a close-up of the edgedrain in the trench. The practice of placing subgrade soil on the geotextile to keep it from flopping over is not recommended, as the subgrade could contaminate the trench. Notice dips and bends in the edgedrains. Where are the outlets? * The trench is being backfilled with open-graded base course material. This slide reveals that the geotextile overlaps the PCC pavement, as in a completely wrapped trench. This will block the drainage path of the permeable base and is bad practice. The water will have to travel through the geotextile to get to the edgedrain. Compare with next slide. * This is a schematic representation of the dual outlet system, which allows flushing equipment to enter the edgedrain from either end.
