The greatest symbol of the city is Acropolis. No visitors to Athens will miss seeing the monument as it stand high on a hill in the centre of the city. It was built there in the 5th century BC so that it was convenient for everyone to get to. The buildings of the Acropolis were made of marble. However, throughout history, the Acropolis has been damaged partly by natural forces like earthquakes, and partly by man. Efforts to restore the Acropolis have started since 1835. In 1987, the monument received a World Heritage listing form UNESCO. After that, much progress was made in reconstructing the monument.
