Do the problems brought by international travel outweigh the advantages? Generally, it brings about more benefits than problems. For visitors themselves, traveling to another exotic country is marvelous and rewarding. They can broaden their horizons and know more customs, lifestyles, rituals or beliefs in the faraway lands, so these travelers tend to be more broad-minded. And such a journey to some resort places or nature preserves is also relaxing and refreshing, giving them a break from the bustling world of a city. All these can be gained at a lower price now, with cheaper flights and easier visa acquisition. Apart from these individual benefits, many more can be easily noted. International travel indeed creates more employment opportunities, adding to the revenue of the host country and increasing income of local residents. This is the very reason that it is encouraged for. Another obvious advantage of international tourism development is that it tends to enhance understanding between different nations or ethnic groups. During their travel in an alien country, tourists may find its people who are unexpectedly hospitable and friendly far from alien and vice versa. Take the Beijing Olympic Games for example, it is reported 600.000 foreign tourists came China getting rid of the outdated misconception of China as a red “revolutionary” country. Taking a long view, some people may be concerned that if foreign visitors swarm into a country too often, it may be damaging to the preservation of local culture in terms of religion, language or some customs. This may be true in the long run. But the short-term benefits brought by international travel clearly outweigh its disadvantages.
