First, there are actually 237. These ‘ecoregions’ are not generally the same units as the finer-scale terrestrial ecoregions of the previous slide, but represent groupings or combinations (lumping) of the smaller terrestrial ecoregions, with the addition of some freshwater and marine ecoregions. This system was developed to highlight representative (of biogeographic realms such as the Palearctic or Indomalaysia, as well as biomes such as boreal forests or deserts) areas of the world that contain outstanding levels of endemism or that preserve outstanding ecological phenomena such as intact vertebrate migrations or vast intact habitats. They are primarily intended to prioritize those areas of the world where WWF would choose to work initially - but the final goal should still be to develop ecoregional visions for all of the 867 finer-scale terrestrial ecoregions (and freshwater and marine ecoregions when those systems are completed) which cover the entire planet. * The Global 200 ecoregions are poorly named.
