ABSTRACT Aluminum is a promising metal in long-span spatial structure owing to its light weight, durability and ductility. Aluminum alloy structure enjoys aesthetic appeal, light weight, free maintenance, long service life and has a good comprehensive economic benefit. This paper introduces two kinds of reticulated shells based on Caofeidian Digital Coal Storage Base whose mechanical properties are compared by two finite element software—MIDAS Gen and ANSYS. Firstly, this paper illustrates research status at home and abroad of aluminum reticulated shells. Based on design conditions and load conditions, the author built the numerical model of vierendeel dome and single layer dome respectively by two finite element software—MIDAS Gen and ANSYS. Then static behavior analysis of the two kinds of reticulated shells was carried out by MIDAS Gen considering temperature effect. The stress level of members, stability of members and node displacement are studied. Eigenvalue buckling analysis and nonlinear buckling analysis (geometric nonlinearity and material nonlinearity) were carried out by ANSYS to identify instability mode and critical load factor. The stiffness distribution and weak areas of the two kinds of structures were compared. Both structures had enough stable bearing capability. The dynamic performance analysis including the natural vibration properties and the revitalization of decomposition response spectrum analysis wa s carried out to ascertain that the two kinds of structure have enough bearing capacity under the earthquake action. Stiffness tests of the plate joint on in-plane, out-plane stiffness properties were carried out to obtain stiffness of the joint in the elastic range
