* * Finally, the IC2008UA model is SGI’s first air container and is truly something to get excited about for ICE Cube deployments going into cool and dry climates especially. With the air container you can eliminate the chilled water requirement of other container models entirely, instead using filtered outside air. This makes for a PUE as low as 1.05 – data centers really can’t get any more efficient than this! The air container comes with an adiabatic cooling system that uses evaporative cooling techniques to help lower the cold aisle temperature. All it requires is 1% of the water of the chilled water models provided by what amounts to be a simple garden hose. The air container is a 20’ long model and supports up to eight 44U roll-in cabinets, providing the same flexibility for heterogeneous gear as the other universal designs. * * The air container ships as three separate modules – the primary IT module, the adiabatic cooler module and a transformer. Assembled on site, this ICE Cube data center supports up to eight 34.3 kW roll-in racks. You can even install up to 6 Altix ICE or Altix UV cabinets in this container! The adiabatic cooler enables a PUE under 1.07 when the container is installed in an appropriate climate. If you’re familiar with airside economizers that are being widely deployed to increase the efficiency of brick and mortar faciilities, think of the air container as turning the airside economizer into the data center itself – that’s essentially what we’re doing here! * Looking at the IT module in more detail, there are eight rack locations with IEC 309 power receptacles overhead. A motor actuated louvered door automatically adjusts itself as needed to help control temperature and humidity, based on the input of built-in sensors. * The adiabatic cooling module attaches to one side of the container and contains the air filtration and adiabatic cooler media. A form of evaporative cooling, the only water that the air container needs is a garden hose
