Overview One key issue in developing an action research topic is to choose the mode of research. Key points before collecting the data--- by Anne Burn First, techniques you use should be well matched to what you try to find out. Second, you should weigh up how to balance data collecting with teaching. Third, remember that data are not an end in themselves but a way to link action. 2. Two Dimensions 1) Reliability 2) Validity 3. Classification or Categories of Research Mode What are the ways to categorize research methods? 1) Quantitative and qualitative approaches 定量的 - 定性的 2) Introspective and empirical data 内省的 - 经验的 3) Individual and collaboration approaches 个人的 - 合作的 4) Complementary and intrusive approaches 增补性的 - 干预性的 5) Illuminative / heuristic and conclusive approaches 启发式的 - 结论 式的 1) Quantitative and qualitative approaches Quantitative research: 定量的 Broadly used to describe what can be counted or measured and can therefore be considered objective. Features: objective, using only, or mostly, data accurately measured or counted Qualitative research: 定性的 Used to describe data which are not amenable to being counted or measured in an objective way and therefore subjective. Features: substantial subjective element, using procedures that make use of qualitative data, eg: observations and interviews 2) Introspective and empirical data Introspective or mentalistic data: 内省的 Involving in information which is acquired from a person’s account of his or her own through processes, feelings, ideas, etc. in other words, by looking inward. Empirical data: 经验的 Factual information which is acquired through experience or observation (eg. by doing carefully controlled experiments), ie. by looking outward. 3) Indivi
