It describes how the theme of health in the picturesque debates of eighteenth century England (including such concepts as active curiositywas taken up and developed in arguments for the nineteenth century urban park movement in England and North America. Rece nt theories on the mecha nisms behi nd health ben efits of nature and access to Iandscape are compared with claims made in the nineteenth century and earlier. The importa nee of access to the Ian dscape appears to be as releva nt as ever in the context of modern urban lifestyles but the need for better evidenee and understanding remains.
