However, it is gaining more interest with each passing day. In Europe and here in Asia, countries are expecting their food suppliers to be more rigorous in tracking their products both within their own processes, as well as between business partners. Regulations have become increasingly more strict, and some countries such as Japan and Korea are even banning the import of certain foods. The most well-know of these is the ban on some North American beef products. North America has been focusing much of its effort on food safety since the mid-1960’s and only recently has pushed beyond the four walls of business to look at the need for whole-chain traceability between supply chain partners. In addition, there are many global factors that are driving changes in the way we think about food traceability. Bioterrorism, the growth of exotic diseases, and even the enforcement of new commercial protocols by major companies like McDonalds and Wal-Mart are all increasing the pressure on countries and companies to improve their traceability practices.
