First, I intend to double major in Film Studies and Theatre, dance and Performance. This Decal course “Disney and Our Daily Lives” exactly coincide with my academic foci, as I am currently researching on the transition between silent film era (before 1925) and sound film era (mainly 1930s). The first Disney sound cartoon film (Steamboat Willie) was produced in 1928, which was just in the transition period between silent film and sound film. Therefore, I earnestly want to develop a deeper understanding of my academic focus by joining this Decal course, as I can definitely find more friends with similar ambition here to discuss together and explore more about the new sound animation era which Disney had brought about. Second, Disney Animation is not just “talking pictures” to me. Disney cartoon is like the return of magic. In Disney, every piece contains a life-long philosophy, and it frequently motivated me and made me burst into tears. Especially when I felt stressful, I would always watch Disney cartoon, just like I am still living in a pure, innocent world without the worries of jobs, money or relationship. Nowadays, students are all busy looking for jobs, tangled up in relationship, and don’t believe in “Live together happily after” anymore. As we grow up, people become disillusioned gradually. But I just want a place, a screen and a chance, that can bring me back to the most innocent time of
