As an example, your system may have 5 years of historical data on-line. As the time go by, you eventually shift into an archive file already used and erase the oldest values on the system. Today, you might need to look at some values which are no longer on-line. If you kept a permanent backup, you can restore only the archive files covering the time period required. To restore an archive that was backed up to a removable media, follow these steps: Copy the files from the backup media to a local hard drive. The file does not have to be in the same folder as the other archive files. Also, make sure you do not overwrite an existing archive. Register the archive file using the Archives plug-in in PI SMT (or use piartool –ar filename command). Make the file non-shiftable to prevent this archive file to get into the permutation process (or use piartool –ads filename command).
