Which of the following words do you think best describe the feelings of a woman who waited a long time but failed to get a promised call from her lover? About the author: Dorothy Parker Dorothy Parker Dorothy Parker was born in 1893 in New Jersey and grew up in New York. After selling some poems to Vogue, a very popular fashion magazine, in 1916, she was given a job writing about fashion for the magazine. She later became a drama critic and book reviewer for some other leading North American journals. A well-known poet, journalist, and playwright, she was also famous in the New York literary circles for her witty conversation. Married twice, divorced and widowed, she died alone in a hotel room in Manhattan in 1967. Dorothy Parker’s stories are often very short, and her poetry is simple and usually very funny. The story in this unit was published in 1944. Comprehension work Read the text and discuss the questions1-5. 1. What was the girl doing? How did she feel? She was waiting for a call from a man. She felt increasingly restless and desperate. 2. What did she intend to do to distract herself? What did she hope would happen? She intended to distract herself by doing something else. She thought if she counted five hundred by fives, the telephone might ring. She would count slowly. To be honest to the promise, she would not answer the phone even if it rang before she got to five hundred. Comprehension work 3. What did the man promise? How long had the girl been waiting for the call? The man promised to call the girl at five o’clock. The girl had been waiting for more than two hours. 4. What excuse did the girl think up for the man? Why did she do so? She tried to deceive herself by thinking up an excuse that something might have prevented the man from making the call. She tried to persuade herself
